Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Beaches

You are staying at Orlando Hideaway and the weather is glorious. Within an hours drive, you can be at one of Florida’s glorious, white beaches.

East Coast Beaches

Beaches on the East Coast offer the best waves and are the best beaches to go to for surfing. Generally, the waves are better the further north you are and the Atlantic Coast water is a little cooler than at the other coastal beaches.

Cocoa Beach – This is the closest beach to Orlando. Driving time is approximately 45 minutes to one hour.

Daytona Beach – This is a wide, flat beach and is approximately a one hour drive from Orlando. You can drive your car onto the sand.

New Smyrna Beach – Also a wide, flat beach with vehicle access. Driving time is approximately 1.25 hours.

Melbourne Beach – This beach is easily reached from Emerald Island and is more popular with the locals. Driving time is approximately 1.25 hrs.

West Coast Beaches

Beaches on the west coast are warmer and calmer as these beaches are situated in the middle of the Gulf Stream. These beaches offer wonderful sunsets. St Petersburg and Clearwater are two of the most popular beaches. They are approximately a two hour drive from Orlando.

Other sites to view while visiting the West Coast beaches are the Historic Spanish Fort at Fort DeSoto (a 2.25 hr drive from Orlando). Driving further south and away from the crowds you can visit Longboat Key, Sarasota, Ft Myers, Naples and Marco Island (a 2.5 to a 4 hr drive from Orlando)

South East Beaches

The South East beaches of Florida have more of a metropolitan feel to them and are a hotspot for celebrities (Miami Beach – a 4 hr drive from Orlando)

Take in the many mansions of Palm Beach (a 3 hr drive from Orlando)

Key West is one of the best places in the world to go scuba diving (a 7 hr drive)

Panhandle

The beaches of the Florida Panhandle are quite similar to the West Coast beaches since the Panhandle is actually part of the West Coast but is located further north. The Panhandle offers more outdoor activities such as camping and fishing.

Destin (6.5 hour drive) Voted “Best Beach” by Parent magazine. Offers half-day and full-day fishing charters.

Panama City – 6 hr. drive from Orlando. There are 27 miles of white, sandy beach. If you enjoy diving you will see why this area is called “The Wreck Capital of the South.”

Walt Disney World

Walt Disney World – covers over 47 sq miles. There are 4 major theme parks: Magic Kingdom Park, Epcot, Disney-MGM and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. There are 2 water parks: Disney’s Blizzard Beach and Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon.

Theme Parks

Orlando is definitely the theme park capital of the world. There is something for everyone. Many people are familiar with what Disney has to offer but may not be aware of all the other great things available. Your stay at Orlando Hideaway gives you the freedom to explore sights outside the normal theme parks. Get to the big theme parks early to beat some of the crowd. • Universal Studios, 1000 Universal Studios Plaza, Orlando, FL, 32819 – Offers a very entertaining day of TV trivia and movie rides.
• Sea World Adventure Park and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay – both of these quality parks are part of the Anheuser Busch family. Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is the sister park of Sea World Adventure Park and is only a 60 minute drive from Orlando. This park is a favorite with all age groups and offers thrilling rides as well as animal encounters.
• Discovery Cove - 6000 Discovery Cove Way, Orlando, FL 32821 – Admission to Discovery Cove is limited to a thousand guests a day. You must have advance reservations. Your day includes a video on the lives of wild dolphins, going into the lagoon and eventually into deeper water (flotation devices are supplied) to be towed around by an amazing dolphin. You can also snorkel, relax on the beach, or cool off under the waterfalls.
• Kennedy Space Center –State Road 405, Kennedy Space Center, Fl – a 60 minute drive from Orlando. Offers many artifacts from space exploration, exhibits and wonderful IMAX presentations. You can take a bus tour (allow 3 to 4 hrs) in which you can view the Space Shuttle launch pad, the huge Vehicle Assembly Building, the Apollo/Saturn V Center and the International Space Station.
